Linchpin

You Are The Linchpin

March 19, 20252 min read

A few weeks ago, my husband, Dave was sick with a bout of Vertigo. What a crazy sickness.

Your mind seems fine until you sit up or stand up and the whole world starts spinning.

It is such a helpless feeling and frustrating too, knowing all you want and need to accomplish.

While you might power through with a cold or hurt back, vertigo leaves you unable to lift your head or even stare at a screen.

Who does the work if you’re sick and you're a solopreneur?

Most things can be rescheduled, but only you can place the order or make the payment for inventory you need to restock.

Only you can pay that credit card bill that's due or ensure that ads are running properly.

In these situations, you realize that you are the linchpin and your business is vulnerable, because you are in fact “Human.”

At my business we spend time thinking about linchpin redundancy.

When Dave is sick or I am sick or just need a vacation, business carries on.

We create that type of redundancy for all our team because we all are in fact “Human.”

Take a minute right now and think about the things you do that would cause a real hardship for your business if you couldn't lift your head off the pillow tomorrow.

Now think about a backup plan.

Who could help you? Do you have a VA assistant you need to train on this task? Or maybe your spouse?

Put a meeting with yourself on your calendar to write out the process - with screenshots and video would be even better.

Next set a time with backup person to show them where the process document lives and have them watch you perform the task and follow along the document.

The next time you have to do the task, ask them to do it and you watch them.

You will see that your process doc isn't exactly clear and that's OK.

Just modify it so it makes sense to your backup.

Now you have just bought yourself some insurance.

You have a little slice of freedom that didn't exist before.

I recommend you exercise it with a deliberate day off as a preventative measure against the sick day that might come from overwork.
