Are You Spending Your Time Polishing Problems?
“Persistent perfect problems are a great way to hide from what’s possible.” - Seth Godin.
Are you spending your time polishing problems?
It's easy to do. Our brains are wired for it.
85% of our thoughts are programmed from an early age.
So our brains can conserve energy by using the previously paved neural pathways.
In this way, we go about the world in a comfortable path, not having to reinvent the wheel.
But if you are polishing your same old problems, are you really getting where you want to go?
Sometimes you have to spend the energy to break out of the ruts to see the world differently.
It really is like drawing, you have to see things in a new light.
I do a creativity practice every day because this allows me to create new pathways in my brain.
These new pathways give me the opportunity to put down the polishing cloth and see problems in a new way.
Just a few minutes of creative endeavors allows my brain to get past the tedium of the same old approach and leap ahead to a new idea, often one that is exciting and engaging.
It's a new way forward.
Today for a quick experiment, instead of grinding away at a familiar problem, get outside and take your phone and take pictures of something beautiful in nature.
It could be a shadow from the evening light or a bug hanging onto your windshield.
Be open to spotting something you'd normally pass by without even seeing.
And then look at it and really see what is unique about your photograph.
This simple exercise will give you a break from the polishing.
When you come back to the problem, you can think about it in a new way; try to see it from a new unique perspective.
In this way you can start to see what is possible.
