Happy Fourth of July weekend.

I’m writing this from North Carolina, where I’ll be spending the long weekend with my dogs and my family.

This is the 250th anniversary of American independence.

I remember fifty years ago, in the bicentennial year of 1976, I was Betsy Ross in the Fourth of July parade in my little hometown.

I remember the dress, the flag, the sun.

But that’s not really what I want to write about today.

What Independence Actually Means

I’ve been thinking about what that word “independence” actually means.

I want to write about the pause. Not the fireworks or the parades. The quieter part.

Independence is what you have when you’ve done the work to build something that can stand on its own.

It’s what a business feels like when it doesn’t need you to hold every piece up every day.

It’s what a weekend feels like when you can actually step away without everything collapsing behind you.

That kind of independence doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built.

Can Your Business Run Without You?

Not a judgment. Not a failure. Just something worth noticing.

The best long weekends I’ve had over the years came after weeks when my team and I did hard work and then let ourselves close the laptop.

Not because everything was perfect, but because we’d built enough structure that stepping away was safe.
