Winging it quarter after quarter

January 22, 20262 min read

Nearly 200 ecommerce business owners have taken our Ecommerce Business Performance Assessment and determined if they have a clear written vision for their business that's been communicated, and if they set quarterly goals to make progress toward it.

Barely one in ten checked the box for all three of those things.

Almost everyone running an ecommerce business is doing so without an idea of where they're going with it, or how to get to that place if they do have a plan.

Most people scored in the low category.

This means there's no clear vision written down, no communication to others about where the business is headed, and no goal-setting.

There were a handful of you in the middle.

Maybe you've thought about where you want to take this business, maybe you've had a conversation about it with some team members once or twice, but there's no set plan on how to achieve it.

So what happens when you and your team aren't clear on what you're working towards?

Your team doesn't know why they do what they do.

There's no clear motivation showing them why they're important to success.

They show up, do work, go home. But they're not aligned. They're not pulling in the same direction.

Opportunities are missed because you're too busy fighting the newest fire.

You just react, you don't plan. You're always playing defense.

In ecommerce, where things move fast and margins are tight, that's how businesses bleed out.

I know you're busy. Trust me, I know.

But writing down a vision doesn't have to feel like one more thing on an already impossible list.

What you need to understand is you can't get where you're going if you don't know where to go in the first place.

Your team can't help you build something if they don't know what to build.

Productive decisions can't be made if you don't have a clear picture of what success looks like.

You for sure can't scale with a purpose if you're just winging it quarter after quarter.

If you're not in the tiny group with the plan nailed down, you're leaving opportunity on the table and working harder than you need to because you have no guidance.

Take the Assessment for Ecommerce Business Performance.

Find out where you stand and what needs to change, because running a business without vision and goals is running you into the ground.
