What are you putting off?

What belief are you telling yourself before you start?

I had an open office hours call a couple of weeks ago.

A client joined me to report on his progress with implementing Profit First.

He was also having some inventory cash flow issues for the Q4 sales ramp up.

As we talked about some loan options to bridge his cash while Q4 sales came in, I could see he was resistant to the concept.

I asked, “Why does this cause you concern?”

He shared that he didn't have enough money in the bank to ask the bank for money.

It took me a minute to process that he felt like he had to have a lot of cash to be able to secure a working capital loan

We discussed this situation, strong sales for over a year, POs from major retailers, no debt so far - he was bootstrapping.

I explained the lenders will ask questions and want his personal credit histories etc.

But everything that I knew about his business added up to potentially make him a good candidate for a loan.

I could see both a sense of relief and embarrassment on his face.

He said “I've had this all wrong. I believed I had to have money to ask for a loan.”

He had made up a story for why he wasn't worthy.

I shared what I saw and that I believed his business had a lot going for it.

He was boosted and started reaching out to the lending contacts I gave him.

What I realized is that when I am fearful about something, I also start to put obstacles in my path so that I don't take the steps that would move me forward.

My tendency for perfection and control step up when what I really need is courage and curiosity.

Courage to step forward with wonder and be open to possibility.

Curiosity to try something different, to see the problem in a new way.

I know my brain is seeking safety with this desire for control but really, it's not helping me.

It's creating a path that could be perilous in the long run.

I was so proud of my client for being willing to open his eyes and see a new way and I can't wait to see what he learns through this journey.
