What is your Priority?
Last week I met with a client who shared that her dream is to have a family, but that her business is struggling and she's not sure that the time is right.
Her partner's work is super demanding, so that is another wrinkle.
Being in her mid 30s means that time is also a factor.
This seems like an insurmountable challenge to her.
I reminded her that because she's trying to jump to the solution and operating from the perspective of urgency, her brain is in an anxious state and she isn't doing her best thinking.
When problems seem too complex, it's time to really look at what basic, simple things may be missing.
For me, I need time to write in my journal, to take my walks, to meditate, and to paint.
Those things give me a calm mind with better clarity to create.
Marie Folio in her book, Everything is Figureoutable, says clarity comes from engagement, not thought.
So here were my suggestions to my client:
First, do the 2 to 3 practices that make you feel cared for - walking, writing, meditation, lifting weights, whatever they are for you.
Go into self-care mode.
Then give yourself permission to do whatever would be the next best step to move you in the direction you want to head.
You're not committing to a full plan, you are just engaging toward the direction you want to go.
Get curious and brainstorm what could be fun or even exciting to move down the path.
When you are in the space of self-care and you know the next step, then engage.
Once you do, you will see more clearly the next best step.
You will be moving into the future from a creative headspace and not urgently trying to solve all the wrinkles of the problem at once.
