Take a Breath

October 24, 20252 min read

I recently listened to a Tim Ferris podcast with James Nestor, the author of Breath.

It was so intriguing to think about how much our breath impacts everything from our sleep quality to our clarity of mind.

I’ve not slept well for several months, and I knew it was because of losing my brother.

However, I learned from this podcast some new techniques to improve my sleep.

I bought the book and have been listening to it.

I’m getting an education about the evolution of the human skull and the impact on our breathing and our lungs.

It is fascinating!

One premise of the book is that we breathe through our mouth too much and that is impacting our health and our sleep in multiple ways.

One solution he recommended is to try mouth tape at night.

I am on night three and it has been a game changer for me.

I have monitored my sleep since 2019 when I was given an Oura ring for speaking with the Amazing conference.

For the last two years my sleep score has been in the low 70s.

In prior years my averages were above 80 and 85.

The last three nights when I have applied mouth tape, my scores have been above 80 and I feel so rested in the morning when I wake up.

I know it is a limited amount of personal data, but it supports all the evidence he presents in the book.

He reports that many people suffering with sleep apnea resolved it with training their bodies to breathe through their nose.

He also shares evidence that as we work on computer screens, we often adjust our breathing to mouth breathing.

He reports that many people suffer from Screen Apnea.

80% of those studied have this condition and it impacts how our brains function.

Screen apnea causes us to rely on the amygdala portion of the brain, the flight, fight, or freeze portion.

I know I prefer to use the prefrontal cortex, which is designed to generate our best ideas when I am working on our business.

I’m intrigued and will be trying to address my screen time with this in mind.

At least now when I sit down at my desk in the morning, I am rested.
