Sea Turtles and Surviving
This past week I have enjoyed the reports of loggerhead turtles hatching off the beach of Oak Island, North Carolina.
This is the beach my family visits each year in the fall and we see the remnants of the turtle runs made for the hatchlings to find their way from their nest to the ocean.
They emerge with such determination and their sole purpose is to find their way to the water.
Even dozens of people lining both sides of their paths does not distract them.
They are guided internally.
I've looked up their survival rates and it is gloomy. Only 1 in 1000 survive to adulthood.
Some estimates are 1 in 10,000.
Adulthood for these loggerheads is 25 to 35 years.
In Oak Island, there are over 190 volunteers to help monitor and protect them as part of the Oak Island Sea Turtle Protection program.
This gloomy survival rate makes the survival rate for small businesses seem rosy.
Only 25% of small businesses survive 5 years and, while survival rates are about the same, female owned businesses experience lower revenues.
Only 1.7% of women owned businesses generate more than $1 million in revenue, according to Lendio.
In fact, they report that 90% of women owned businesses generate less than $100,000 in revenue.
According to the New Prairie Press, founders who work with coaches grew their revenue 40% faster and were 3 times more likely to survive longer than 5 years.
Just like those loggerhead hatchlings, business owners need a little help to survive.
And while survival is a milestone, we know that thriving is a better goal.
