A few months ago, I was given the most generous gift from a colleague. It had been a rough week; two long-term employees were diagnosed with significant health issues. These are my friends.
One was the first employee I ever hired in the business, the other was a friend before there was a business – I was a bridesmaid in her wedding. I was devasted.
All this came on the heels of losing my brother in June of last year after just two short months battling pancreatic cancer.
I was tired and sad when I got on a call with a colleague to tell him that I didn’t have the energy and my team didn’t have the bandwidth to take on the project of trialing his SaaS solution.
I expected that news to be accepted and we would quickly plan to get together next spring; no real business to transact in the meeting.

That software is Air Manual and it would provide us a deeper level of process documentation as our team members began minding their health and handing their work off to other team members during their leave.
I cried right on that Zoom call. I knew Alexis Kingsbury would be understanding. We had talked about his Why during the Profit First UK event we both attended in September.
Still, I never expected empathy for how I was feeling about my team members on a personal level; let alone such a generous gift of support that would be a huge benefit to us.
