Into The Unknown
Last week I attended Scaling New Heights, the largest accounting technology conference in the world.
It was my fourth year attending and because of the book I've been reading, Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned, I went without a list of objectives.
I didn't look at the list of speakers; I picked sessions on each morning of the conference.
I didn't methodically go through the exhibit hall; I took the chance to meander and look beyond the vendors I already know.
As you might imagine, in years past, I had planned all of those things in detail.
I knew what I needed to focus on to grow my firm and I methodically connected the dots at the conference.
I “made the most” of my time there, and I looked for vendors and sessions to take us toward the next step in our goals.
This year I listened more to what was said and NOT said.
At dinner, I noticed a long standing partner didn't talk about a direction we were heading.
As a result, I spoke to him after dinner and we had a deep discussion that led to more alignment.
Mostly, my eyes were opened even wider to the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in the accounting industry.
Our next steps will need to be bold, stepping out with curiosity, and looking for novelty, not just the next incremental improvement.
This book, Why Greatness Cannot Be Planned, was written in 2015.
The authors were researchers in artificial intelligence.
At that time, they said “AI remains a distant goal.”
Ten years later, I can say that because of this book and awareness of the myth of objectives, I can see that AI is here now and it will dramatically change my industry in the next few years.
This book gave me the frame of reference to realize that I need to have my head up looking for possibility at the conference.
It wasn't head down, focused on the next step.
It also has given me the courage to try new things and search for novelty, something new and different.
I'm excited to explore more and serve our clients with the latest tools.
So let me ask, do you take the time to lift your head up and look around?
I know the constant decisions about inventory, developing marketing strategies, etc., require you to keep your focus and keep your head down.
Yet, the world is shifting quickly and that means your market is too.
