I'm a Big Fan of Seth Godin
Something you'll quickly learn about me is that I'm a big fan of Seth Godin.
A great blog he put out stated that analysis equals facts plus interpretation.
He asserted that “credibility and persuasion are based on showing your work.”
I agree and also believe as business owners we need to show our work for our own needs.
First, you must do the work and get granular about what you expect to happen with your numbers.
It’s not enough to look backward and see how you did: you must put a stake in the ground for where you are going.
I don't believe in goals that are based on made-up numbers, like 10% growth.
Do the real work to determine what has to happen to grow and achieve your goals.
Get into the details, then plan it out.
Where and when will the cash arrive and how and when will it be spent??
How much will you keep as profit?
Get crystal clear on your assumptions and then compare that plan to actual performance every week.
This is how you learn and adjust quickly.
It’s forward-looking and makes sure your decisions align with your resources.
You plan the timing of the financial impact of each decision so you know what you can afford and when you can afford it.
This level of planning doesn't take much time each week once you get started.
In exchange for the time you put in, you gain confidence in your decisions.
You essentially show yourself your work to gain credibility in your own analysis.
Bonus: You get to sleep at night too.
If you feel you are flying blind and building your business on hope alone there is a better way.
Yes, it involves numbers, but these are numbers you can understand because they represent every decision you make in a day, just quantified and put into your plan.
