Do What Feels Fun

August 18, 20252 min read

While I was in Northwest Washington with my daughter last month, we attended a paint and sip class.

A local coffee and wine shop hosted a local artist to teach us how to paint an orca.

I, being a dabbling painter for years, set about reproducing exactly the orca, breaching the calm Puget Sound surface in the beautiful pink and gold sunset.

It was a fun thing for me and Alaina to do together and I enjoyed how different our approaches were to the art making.

First of all, she was so much more messy.

She had paint all over both her hands and arms.

She was into the art.

I was into “reproduction.

When we were finished, her painting had so much more energy as you could see her brush strokes almost in an impressionistic style.

Everyone commented on her piece.

We all envied her ability to do her own thing and the vibrancy of her painting.

I asked her what gave her the idea to paint in that style and she said, “I knew I couldn't do what the instructor did, so I didn't even try that approach. I went for what felt fun to me.”

Hmm.

What felt fun versus worrying about others expectations for the assignment - it seems like a good approach to me.

So, what are you doing to have fun in your business?

Are you playing or doing anything at all to keep your energy up and your creativity alive?

As entrepreneurs we need creativity because, let's face it, we are problem solving machines.

But all that problem solving focus takes its toll.

If we don't fill our buckets with some fun, our energy diminishes and we start to feel overwhelmed.

In our Cash Accelerator, we learn about the struggles our clients are facing in achieving their goals.

Often, they're doing nothing to stay creative.

They have disconnected from the things they enjoy.

They can't justify any fun because they have “real problems”.

My first assignment to them is to get back on the fun bus.

You need your best brain to solve your business problems.

You are not going to find the answers by working yourself to burnout or “reproducing” what someone else has done.

Sure, you might get a good idea every once in a while, but you are unique.

Your unique skills and perspective are needed to solve your problems.

So take a page from Alaina's book and get messy, have fun.

And if you need more encouragement, let's chat about our Cash Accelerator.
