Ice on leaf

Are you paying attention?

April 25, 20252 min read

“The quality of life is in proportion, always, to the capacity for delight. The capacity for delight is the fit of paying paying attention.” Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way

Paying attention takes practice and requires a desire to change our normal entrepreneurial ways of getting sh!t done, being busy.

One way I built paying attention into my routine was by keeping my phone in picture mode and in my hand ready to take pictures.

When I walk with my dogs in the mornings, I look for things to photograph, things that catch my eye at that unique moment.

This extra awareness of my surroundings keeps me in the present and out of my head.

For example, this is a photo of ice crystals on a sedum in my garden.

The ice crystals made beautiful outlines painted on each leaf.

As you pay attention you will find delight in your discoveries.

You open your mind up to possibility.

You get out of the survival portion of your brain, and you can start to see other paths to take.

Building these new pathways in your brain will be valuable to you in your work too.

As you ponder a problem, you will have access to more creative avenues, not just the next thing you have to do.

Your ability to see forward expands.

Don't take my word for it, take a walk for 15 minutes.

Look for things that catch your eye and take a photo.

Back in your comfy chair, look at them and change the value to black and white or edit them to show up in different ways.

It's a fun exercise in paying attention and then creativity.

Do this for a few days and see if you notice that your brain sees work problems differently.

If you are too busy and find that you're not paying attention, our Cash Flow Accelerator can help.
