flowers growing in dry soil

Adversity is our Friend

August 08, 20252 min read

As a mom and a gardener, I want to make everything perfect for both my kid and my flowers.

I want to pave the way to ensure they both have all they need to flourish.

Yet I recall an extension agent in Missouri telling my Master Gardener group “the way to get an apple tree to bloom is to beat it with a broom.”

Wait, what?

Turns out this old folklore actually has roots in truth.

By hitting the apple tree, you encourage it to strengthen its center and roots in order to survive and grow better.

We, and plants too, actually need to experience adversity to grow and build a strong core.

I think there is a relationship here to Profit First based on Parkinson's law, “you use what you got”.

We set up bank accounts that ensure we take care of the owner with profit and owner pay.

We have a tax account to ensure that we take care of our obligation to the government and we operate the business on what's left.

We force the business to operate within constrained resources.

This creates adversity in a way.

It requires us to be frugal, efficient and innovative.

We beat the business with broom, so to speak.

This is good!

It helps our business flourish in today's environment.

Over and over, I have seen clients attempt to solve their cash issues by borrowing money to throw at the problem.

In reality, this is like throwing gas on the fire, and it creates chaos in the same way.

There is a place for loans to help with growth in a business once their product,  marketing, and financial systems are dialed in.

But when you don't know your profitability by product and you see you are losing cash, adding more cash to continue the same practices is not the answer.

Learning where you are leaking cash is the place to start.

In our Cash Accelerator, we help you dial in your cash.

You will know your cash runway and be sure you are focusing on the right issues.

Looking at your dollars and your direction allows us to get to work solving the problems in your business.

Then, when you can use debt wisely, we can help you forecast on how to best deploy that cash infusion.

If you need to know where you're leaking the cash, let's chat about how Your Profit Team can help.
